Puppies Sleep A LOT (And That’s Normal!)
New puppy owners are often surprised: puppies sleep 18-20 hours per day! That’s more than newborn human babies. Sleep is when puppies process learning, grow, and develop their brains. A well-rested puppy is a happy, trainable puppy.
Sleep Needs by Age
- 8-12 weeks: 18-20 hours. Awake for 1 hour, then nap for 2 hours. Repeat all day
- 3-6 months: 16-18 hours. Longer wake periods (1-2 hours), still lots of naps
- 6-12 months: 14-16 hours. Settling into adult patterns with daytime naps
- Adult dogs: 12-14 hours (yes, adult dogs are also champion sleepers!)
The 1-Up, 2-Down Rule
The golden rule for young puppies: 1 hour awake, 2 hours napping. Set a timer! Most “bad behavior” (biting, zoomies, hyperactivity) is actually overtiredness. When in doubt, enforce a nap.
Sample Daily Schedule (10-Week-Old Puppy)
- 7:00 AM: Wake, potty, breakfast, play (1 hour)
- 8:00 AM: Nap (2 hours)
- 10:00 AM: Potty, training, play (1 hour)
- 11:00 AM: Nap (2 hours)
- 1:00 PM: Potty, lunch, play (1 hour)
- 2:00 PM: Nap (2 hours)
- 4:00 PM: Potty, training, socialization (1 hour)
- 5:00 PM: Nap (1-2 hours)
- 7:00 PM: Potty, dinner, calm play
- 8:30 PM: Last potty, bedtime routine
- 10:00 PM – 2:00 AM: Sleep (potty break as needed)
- 2:00 AM – 7:00 AM: Sleep
Creating Good Sleep Habits
- Consistent schedule: Same wake/bed times daily, even weekends
- Calm wind-down: No exciting play 30 minutes before bed
- Comfortable crate: Dark, quiet, cozy. Cover with a blanket if it helps
- White noise: Masks household sounds that might wake puppy
- Potty before bed: Last break 15 minutes before crate time
Signs Your Puppy Is Overtired
- Biting harder than usual
- “Zoomies” – frantic running in circles
- Inability to settle or focus
- Barking at nothing
- Ignoring commands they normally know
Solution: It’s not defiance – it’s exhaustion! Calmly place them in their crate for a nap.
Nighttime Crying: What’s Normal
Expect some crying the first 3-7 nights. This is normal adjustment, not a problem to “fix” by giving in.
- Potty cry: Urgent, insistent. Take out immediately, boring trip, straight back to bed
- Lonely cry: Whimpering. Wait for a pause, then briefly reassure without making it exciting
- Never: Let them “cry it out” for extended periods – this creates anxiety
FAQ
Should I wake my puppy to eat?
For the first 2 weeks home, yes – maintain 3-4 meals on schedule. After that, let them sleep and adjust meal times slightly.
My puppy won’t nap. What do I do?
Enforce naps in the crate. Many puppies don’t self-regulate – they need you to create the calm environment. Cover the crate, play white noise, and leave the room.
